Kerala Medical Teachers Protest Over Death and Assault of Doctor in Kolkata

The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) will hold a protest against the death and sexual assault of a female post-graduate trainee doctor in Kolkata. The safety of women doctors, especially those on night and emergency duty, has always been a concern, said KGMCTA.

KGMCTA emphasized that it is the responsibility of the respective governments to create a safe working environment for these doctors. They criticized the laxity in security measures and the failure to quickly find and punish the real culprits.

The KGMCTA will join a nationwide protest by doctors’ organizations demanding the arrest of the culprits and improved workplace safety. They announced that similar protest measures will be reflected in government medical colleges in Kerala if further actions are needed.

As part of this, medical teachers, PG doctors, house surgeons, and medical students will organize protest programs in all government medical colleges in Kerala at 10:30 am on Monday, said KGMCTA.

Meanwhile, doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi held a protest on Saturday in support of the female post-graduate trainee doctor who was found dead inside the seminar hall of the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal. The protesting doctors carried posters and chanted slogans demanding a CBI inquiry.

Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Suvendu Adhikari, has also demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident.
