In Kerala, MLAs from the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) are donating one month’s salary, amounting to Rs 50,000 each, to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) to support those affected by the Wayanad landslides. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has contributed Rs 1 lakh, and his wife TK Kamala has donated Rs 33,000.

Earlier, CPI-M state secretary MV Govindan announced that the party’s Kerala unit contributed Rs 25 lakh to the relief fund, with additional contributions of Rs 10 lakh each from the party’s Tripura and Tamil Nadu units. Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala also pledged his one month’s salary to the CMDRF.

Many political leaders, actors, and businesses have responded to the Chief Minister’s appeal for contributions, leading to a significant influx of donations through various campaign drives.

The Chief Minister reported that 215 bodies have been recovered so far, with 206 people still missing and 83 receiving treatment in hospitals across Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram districts. A total of 10,042 people have been relocated to shelter camps.

The death toll from the landslides, which occurred on July 30 in Chooralmala and Mundakkai of Wayanad, stands at 308 as of Friday, according to Kerala Health Minister Veena George. The latest update indicates that 215 bodies and 143 body parts have been recovered, including 98 males, 87 females, and 30 children. Post-mortem procedures have been completed on 212 bodies and 140 body parts, with 148 bodies identified by relatives so far.

Hospital data shows that 82 people are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals, with 504 people brought to hospitals from the disaster area and 205 discharged so far. Relief teams, including the Indian Army, began search operations at 7 am today, coordinated by North Kerala IGP.
