Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced that nine individuals on the Nipah virus contact list tested negative. This update came after a review meeting held in the Malappuram Collectorate Conference Hall.

Current Status

At present, 406 people are on the contact list, with 194 in the high-risk category. Among them, 139 are healthcare workers. Fifteen people from the contact list are admitted to various hospitals. Those who test negative and recover from symptoms will be discharged but must remain in isolation as per protocol.

Preventive Measures

The Institute of Advanced Virology confirmed that the Nipah virus variant found in 2023 is the same as the previous one. The health department has visited 7,239 houses in Pandikkad and Anakkayam grama panchayats, reporting 331 fever cases in Pandikkad and 108 in Anakkayam. Only four cases in Pandikkad are on the primary contact list, and their saliva has been collected for testing.

Community Efforts

A meeting with representatives and officials, including MPs, MLAs, and the Zilla Panchayat President, was held to discuss Nipah prevention. The minister emphasized the importance of proper isolation and requested people to wear masks and maintain social distance. He also mentioned that pension mustering in Pandikkad and Anakkayam would be extended.
