Kerala Health Minister Veena George Leads Efforts Against Suspected Nipah Virus in Malappuram
On Saturday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George held a high-level meeting in Malappuram district following reports of a suspected Nipah virus case. The meeting focused on measures to prevent the virus’s spread and ensure public safety. Officials reviewed the current situation and steps taken so far.
Minister George traveled to Malappuram to lead the outbreak control efforts. The government formed committees to oversee the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Nipah virus control. The meeting included top officials like the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, the Director of the National Health Mission, and the District Collectors of Malappuram and Kozhikode.
Samples from the suspected patient were sent to the Pune virology lab for testing. Last month, Minister George announced intensified Nipah prevention efforts, especially from May to September, when the virus is most likely to spread. She emphasized extreme caution and outlined key preventive measures.
Minister George advised the public not to destroy bat habitats, as this could increase virus transmission risk. She also recommended against consuming fruits bitten by birds and drinking honey from banana peels, which could be contaminated by bats. Proper hygiene, such as washing hands with soap and water after contact with bats or their excrement, was stressed. Educating children about these precautions was also highlighted to ensure community-wide safety.
The Nipah virus, which can be transmitted from animals to humans, can cause severe illness and fatalities. In May 2018, a Nipah virus outbreak in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts resulted in 17 deaths and 18 confirmed cases. This was the third Nipah outbreak in India, with previous ones in West Bengal in 2001 and 2007.
