Kerala Health Minister Veena George and Leaders Respond to Wayanad Landslides
Kerala Health Minister Veena George visited the Health Department Directorate to assess the response to the massive landslides in the Meppadi area of Wayanad. She emphasized the need for precise tracking of hospital beds, setting up temporary hospitals, and evaluating mortuary systems, including mobile mortuaries. The control room will operate 24/7 to assist health workers and the public.
Minister George also directed an assessment of the availability of Rapid Action Medical Units and stressed the importance of evaluating relief camp operations and ensuring health worker services. Senior Health Department officials attended the meeting.
Kerala Minister AK Saseendran confirmed that 54 people have died in the landslides. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and assured all possible help from the central government. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin also offered condolences and support, sending rescue teams and releasing Rs 5 crores for relief measures.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held discussions with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) and requested assistance from the Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force. The Navy’s River Crossing team and other forces are mobilized to assist in the rescue operations, which are challenged by a collapsed bridge in Chooralmala.
