The Kerala government has announced that it will cover the medical expenses for those injured in a fireworks accident in Nileshwaram, Kasaragod district. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Investigation and Arrests

The Human Rights Commission has taken notice of the incident and has asked the District Collector and Superintendent of Police to submit a report within 15 days. The Nileshwaram police have arrested a fourth person, Vijayan from Nileshwaram Kotrachal, who was reportedly present during the fireworks display. Previously, three individuals, including the Veerarkavu Temple Committee President, were arrested.

Details of the Incident

The accident occurred during the Theyyam festival celebrations at the Anjootambalam Veerarkavu Temple, injuring 154 people. The Kasaragod District Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the incident. A case has been registered against eight temple committee members for conducting the fireworks without permission and violating safety guidelines. The investigation is ongoing under various legal sections, including the Explosive Substances Act and attempted murder.

Kasaragod MP Rajmohan Unnithan expressed his shock over the incident, highlighting the cultural significance of the Theyyam festival for the people of North Malabar. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals for treatment.
