Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], August 6: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has responded to Union Minister Bhupender Yadav’s comments regarding the recent landslide in Wayanad. Vijayan criticized Yadav’s remarks, stating that they insult the people affected by the disaster.

Vijayan emphasized that Kerala is still recovering from the trauma of the natural disaster, which claimed many lives. He accused Yadav of exploiting the situation for narrow interests. The Chief Minister questioned Yadav’s claims about unauthorized settlers, pointing out that the people living in Kerala’s hilly regions cannot be labeled as such.

Vijayan also addressed Yadav’s comments on illegal mining, noting that the nearest quarry to the landslide area is 10.2 kilometers away. He accused Yadav of spreading false information and criticized the Union Government for allegedly pressuring scientists to write against Kerala.

Vijayan called for a collaborative approach using scientific methods to prevent future disasters, highlighting the importance of addressing global issues like climate change.

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav had earlier stated that illegal human habitation and mining activities were taking place under the protection of the local government. He urged the Kerala government to create a plan for the ecosensitive zone and submit a report from a committee led by former Director General of Forests Sanjay Kumar.

The landslides in Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad on July 30 caused significant devastation, resulting in loss of lives and property.
