Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Discusses Wayanad Rehabilitation with PM Modi

On Tuesday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to discuss the rehabilitation of Wayanad. The meeting was confirmed by an official release from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). The state government also submitted an additional, detailed memorandum requested by the Centre.

Earlier, on August 17, CM Vijayan stated that climate change is the root cause of the Wayanad landslide disaster. He highlighted the significant impact of climate change on agriculture, noting that rain-dependent rice yields in India could decrease by 20% by 2050 and by 47% by 2080. Similarly, wheat yields could decrease by 19.3% by 2050 and by 40% by 2080.

A study by World Weather Attribution (WWA), an international group of researchers, found that the excessive rainfall on July 30, which triggered the landslides, was a ‘once in a 50-year event’ made about 10% heavier by human-caused climate change. The study emphasizes the need for rigorous landslide risk assessments and improved early warning systems in northern Kerala to prevent future disasters.

The WWA study was conducted by 24 researchers, including scientists from universities and meteorological agencies in India, Malaysia, the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
