Kerala Chief Secretary Dr. V Venu Explains Appointment of IAS Officer K Vasuki
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 21: Kerala Chief Secretary, Dr. V Venu, clarified the appointment of IAS officer K Vasuki as the state’s secretary in charge of external cooperation. This move, criticized by BJP and Congress, aims to establish new relations for the state’s development.
Dr. V Venu emphasized that the appointment is not about engaging in diplomatic relations, which is the central government’s role. He explained that many foreign and multilateral agencies regularly interact with the Kerala government, necessitating better coordination through the external cooperation division.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor supported the appointment, stating it is a focal point of responsibility within the government. He noted that the Kerala government often deals with issues affecting the large Kerala diaspora abroad.
However, BJP State President K Surendran criticized the move as a violation of the Union List of the Constitution, accusing the Kerala government of overreach.
The Kerala government appointed K Vasuki on July 15, with the Resident Commissioner at Kerala House in New Delhi supporting her in liaising with the Ministry of External Affairs and foreign missions.
