Kerala Cabinet Helps Landslide Victims in Wayanad
Financial Aid and Support Announced
The cabinet sub-committee in Wayanad, Kerala, has announced that there are no legal obstacles for landslide victims to receive government benefits, including financial assistance and compensation. Financial aid of Rs 10,000 has been provided to 379 families directly affected by the Mundakai-Churalmala disaster.
The committee stated, “Payment was made through bank accounts. Those who have lost their passbook or do not remember their account number can inform the bank, which will find and deposit the money. If bank details are unavailable, a new account will be opened at zero balance, and the amount will be paid.”
Additionally, a certificate will be issued to the next of kin of deceased persons instead of an inheritance certificate to receive benefits. The committee urged people to avoid unnecessary visits to the Mundakai-Churalmala area, with police establishing control in the area. The search for missing people will continue, and re-inspections will be conducted if requested.
“12 teams are inspecting six local body limits to streamline rehabilitation activities. A dead body and three body parts were recovered from Nilambur Kumbalapara on August 13 and cremated on August 14. So far, 231 dead bodies and 221 body parts have been found in the Mundakai-Churalmala disaster. 420 people have been sent for DNA testing,” the committee added.
The government also aims to protect animals affected by the disaster. The Animal Welfare Department has been instructed to prepare a list of stray animals in the region. Steps are being taken to restore gas connections for those moving from camps to rented houses. The Sanitation Mission is commended for its waste segregation and disposal efforts in the disaster area.
