Kerala Assembly Opposes ‘One Nation, One Poll’

Brinda Karat Praises Resolution

In New Delhi, on October 11, Brinda Karat, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), expressed her support for the Kerala Assembly’s resolution against the ‘One Nation, One Poll’ initiative. She commended the Kerala government and assembly for their commitment to democracy and the Constitution.

The resolution, introduced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister MB Rajesh, was passed unanimously in the absence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who was unable to attend due to health issues. The resolution opposes the central government’s proposal for simultaneous elections, which the Kerala government argues could undermine the democratic process and centralize power.

The Kerala Assembly believes that holding all elections together would disregard India’s diverse social, cultural, and political landscape. The resolution also criticizes the recommendation to shorten the terms of state assemblies, viewing it as a violation of democratic rights.

Brinda Karat hopes other state assemblies will follow Kerala’s lead in opposing this centralization of power.
