Kenyan President William Ruto Responds to Youth Protests Amidst Violence
In Nairobi, Kenya, President William Ruto has announced plans to implement some recommendations from the country’s youth following anti-government protests that have resulted in at least 39 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The protests, which began two weeks ago, were sparked by opposition to the Finance Bill 2024.
Protests and Violence
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported that 39 people have died and 361 have been injured since the protests began. The KNCHR condemned the excessive force used by police against protesters, medical personnel, lawyers, and journalists.
Ruto’s Response
President Ruto acknowledged the youth’s concerns and promised to reduce government expenditure and offices. He plans to meet with young people to discuss their suggestions and find ways to move the nation forward. Ruto emphasized the importance of dialogue and respect during these discussions.
Reactions from Professional Bodies
Several professional bodies and civil society groups, including the Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Medical Association, have rejected Ruto’s call for talks. They argue that the government needs to take decisive action to address the issues raised by the youth, such as public theft, a bloated cabinet, and extrajudicial killings.
Continued Protests
Despite Ruto’s announcement, activists have called for fresh protests, using hashtags like “Occupy Everywhere” and “Ruto must go.” The Indian Embassy in Kenya has advised Indian nationals to exercise caution and avoid areas affected by the protests.
