Kazakhstan’s Tazy Dog Breed Gains International Recognition

The General Committee of the International Canine Federation (FCI) has granted preliminary recognition to the Kazakh Tazy as an official dog breed. Kazakhstan is now designated as the breed’s standard holder. This decision is a crucial step towards fully recognizing the Tazy as a Kazakh breed at the international level.

FCI President Tamas Jakkel congratulated Kazakhstan on this achievement. He emphasized the importance of the next ten years, during which health tests and data on the breed must be collected to ensure the Tazy’s well-being and secure its place as a recognized breed internationally.

Since 2022, Kazakhstan’s Presidential Administration, led by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has prioritized the recognition of the Kazakh Tazy. Their efforts included legislative amendments, scientific research, breeding shows, and exhibitions. In August 2023, Kazakhstan’s Union of Cynologists met all FCI requirements and achieved full membership, allowing them to declare their national dog breeds.

Bauyrzhan Serikkali, President of Kazakhstan’s Union of Cynologists, expressed pride in this accomplishment. He highlighted the Tazy’s deep historical and cultural significance to Kazakhstan and stressed the importance of preserving and popularizing the breed, which has a history of over 4,000 years.

In February, President Tokayev presented two Tazy puppies to French President Emmanuel Macron. In 2023, he also gifted a Tazy to Kazakh pop star Dimash Kudaibergen. Earlier in 2022, Kazakhstan allocated 1.4 billion tenge to preserve and reproduce the Tazy and Tobet hunting dog breeds.

The Tazy is a unique breed with a special place in Zheti Kazyna, reflecting the values and ideals of traditional nomadic society in Kazakhstan.
