Kashmir Artisans Thrive with Vishwakarma Training Scheme
The artisans and craftspeople of Kashmir are benefiting greatly from the Vishwakarma training scheme. This initiative provides specialized training and skill development opportunities, helping them enhance their crafts and boost their income.

Bilal Ahmad, a carpenter, shared, “The place has taught me how to apply online. We have been taught a lot of new things which saves a lot of time. This is the best option to learn and grow in the future.” The scheme offers high-quality training programs focusing on both traditional and modern techniques, enabling artisans to create more intricate pieces of art and attract a wider audience.
Financial Assistance and Tools
The scheme also provides financial assistance to artisans, helping them procure raw materials, tools, and equipment necessary for their craft. Ayob Dar, another local carpenter, said, “I have learned a lot from Vishwakarma. We have been provided with new tools, and this is a good learning place since I previously worked only as a local carpenter.”
Government Contracts and Future Opportunities
Ayob Dar further mentioned, “This is a very good government initiative. After this, we have the opportunity to work under government contracts.” Mohammad Shafi Bhatt, the principal of Women’s Polytechnic, Srinagar, explained, “We are registered training providers with a training centre. We have 5 courses, which include carpentry, brick basing, washerman, tailoring, and barbering. The whole process is well organized and well documented.”
Scheme Impact and Future Plans
Mohammad Ilyaas, the scheme in-charge, said, “The scheme was launched last year. People are still getting to know about it. With the help of media, we are reaching more people. In J&K, a lot of beneficiaries have been added. We plan to mobilize more to grow.”
