Kartik Singh and Indian Golfers Tee Off at 2024 Asia Pacific Amateur Championship in Japan
In Gotemba, Japan, the 2024 Asia Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) is underway, featuring four Indian golfers. Vedant Sirohi, participating for the second time, will tee off with Bowen Chai from China and Thai Ingtawan Wangrungwichaisri. Debutant Rakshit Dahiya is paired with Brunei’s Qawi Aslimon and Korean Junee Choi. Krishnav Nikhil Chopraa, son of a former Indian cricketer, starts from the 10th tee alongside China’s Zaqian Fang and New Zealand’s Robby Turnbull. India’s top amateur, Kartik Singh, plays with Rayhan Latief from Indonesia and Singapore’s Ryan Ang.
The AAC, established in 2009 by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, The R&A, and the Masters Tournament, aims to promote amateur golf in the region. The winner will earn a spot in the 2025 Masters Tournament and The 153rd Open, while runners-up will enter the Final Qualifying for The Open. The tournament is held at the Taiheiyo Club Gotemba, a course designed by Shunsuke Kato and renovated in 2018, offering stunning views of Mount Fuji.
Kartik Singh, a prominent figure at the event, shared his excitement, “Last year, making the cut in the Asia Pacific was definitely the highlight of the year. I think my game has grown a lot in the past year and hopefully I can perform even better this year.” He also highlighted his experiences at the Junior Players Championship and the Junior Presidents Cup, where he performed exceptionally well.
Supported by the Sports Authority of India and the Indian Golf Union (IGU), Kartik is part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), receiving funding for tournaments and coaching. IGU President Brijinder Singh expressed his support for Kartik and other promising young golfers. Kartik, ranked 171st among amateurs, made history last year as the youngest player to make the cut at AAC, finishing T-57.
