Karnataka Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan Apologizes for Remarks on HD Kumaraswamy

In Mysuru, Karnataka, Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan apologized for calling JD(S) leader and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy “Kaalia,” a term the opposition NDA labeled as “racist.” Despite the apology, Khan refused to resign, stating, “I apologize if my statement has offended anyone. Earlier, when I was with him, he used to affectionately call me ‘kulla’ (short) and I used to call him ‘black’. I am ready to apologize if my statement offended anyone.”

Khan believes his remarks will not impact the upcoming by-election results in the state, asserting, “It’s not an issue on which I need to resign. My statement has been interpreted differently. My statement will not affect the election.”

The Janata Dal Secular party condemned the remarks, sharing a video on social media where Khan allegedly made the comments during an election campaign in Channapatna. The JD(S) demanded legal action against Khan for “racial abuse, racism and trying to disturb peace in the society.” They also called for his resignation.

The by-elections in Shiggaon, Sandur, and Channapatna are scheduled for November 13, with results to be announced on November 23.
