Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge Criticizes BJP Over Waqf Board Land Dispute

In Bengaluru, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the ongoing Waqf Board land dispute. He accused the BJP of politicizing the issue and questioned their actions during their governance. Kharge highlighted that even during the BJP’s rule, notices related to the Waqf Board were halted, and the current Chief Minister has assured protection for farmers’ agricultural activities.

The controversy arose due to the Waqf Board’s increased land claims, affecting farmers’ ancestral lands, temples, government buildings, and monuments in Karnataka. This has caused distress among local farmers and landowners, as their land rights are being challenged without proper notification. In Vijayapura District alone, over 15,000 acres have been claimed, including vital farmland. In Honavada village, Tikota Taluk, over 1,500 acres have been claimed as Waqf property.

Farmers in Babaleshwar Taluk have also received notices classifying their lands as Waqf property. Claims extend to historical sites like the Someshwara Temple and Virakta Mutt. The Karnataka Government’s Principal Secretary of the Revenue Department has instructed officials to withdraw notices and stop altering land records under the Waqf Act, warning of disciplinary action for non-compliance.
