Karnataka Government Forms SIT to Investigate COVID-19 Mismanagement
Background
The Karnataka government has decided to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the alleged mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic by the previous BJP government. This announcement was made by Karnataka Law Minister H K Patil during a press conference in Bengaluru.
Allegations Against the Previous Government
Minister Patil accused the former BJP-led government of behaving “inhumanely” during the pandemic, leading to what he described as the “biggest disaster” for the people of Karnataka. He alleged that the government engaged in corruption, including purchasing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at inflated prices and expired medicines.
Details of the Investigation
The SIT will be led by an officer of the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP). The investigation will focus on various irregularities, including the procurement of PPE kits. A committee chaired by Justice Michael D Cunnah has already reviewed around 50,000 documents and submitted an interim report highlighting significant corruption.
Recommendations and Actions
The Justice John Michael D’Cunha Commission report recommended prosecuting former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and former Health Minister B Sriramulu for their roles in purchasing PPE kits from Chinese firms. Minister Patil stated that FIRs would be filed against those accused of mismanagement and corruption during the pandemic.
