On Wednesday, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot welcomed Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed at Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru. Governor Gehlot emphasized the strong friendship between India and the Maldives, highlighting President Muizzu’s recent meetings with Indian leaders. He praised the currency swap agreement and the launch of the RuPay card in the Maldives as signs of economic cooperation. Gehlot expressed optimism about opening consulates in Addu City and Bangalore to boost tourism ties.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, present at the meeting, echoed Gehlot’s sentiments. He noted the historical ties between Bangalore and the Maldives, mentioning that the First Lady studied in Bengaluru. Siddaramaiah highlighted Karnataka’s role in IT and innovation, offering partnership opportunities with the Maldives. He also invited collaboration in educational and cultural exchanges.

President Muizzu thanked India and Karnataka for their hospitality and expressed a desire to enhance cooperation in education and tourism. He acknowledged the significant number of Maldivian students in Karnataka and emphasized mutual development efforts. President Muizzu’s visit to India is part of a five-day trip, following an invitation from President Droupadi Murmu.
