Karnataka Government Withdraws CBI Consent
Priyank Kharge Challenges BJP on Corruption Claims
On Thursday, the Karnataka government decided to withdraw its consent for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe cases in the state. This decision has sparked a political clash between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Senior Minister Priyank Kharge, part of the Siddaramaiah government, has challenged the BJP to provide any evidence of alleged corruption in the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) case. He stated, “The CM is very clear that he’s open to investigation. We have also set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) with a retired judge leading it. The BJP is free to submit any documents to them or the Lokayukta.”
Kharge also responded to the BJP’s demands for the Chief Minister’s resignation, saying, “The Lokayukta will decide on the investigation. They are independent bodies, and any decision regarding the CM will be made by our party. Who is the BJP to tell us what to do?”
He further criticized the BJP for allegedly misusing investigative agencies against opposition parties, recalling a Supreme Court statement that described the CBI as a “caged parrot.” Kharge added, “We are ensuring that the parrot remains caged. If there are interstate offenses or high bank fraudulence, we will consider giving permission for CBI involvement if necessary.”
Kharge concluded by urging the BJP to provide any evidence to the Lokayukta instead of protesting, saying, “Even if they have a shred of evidence, let them give it to Lokayukta. What is this time and again coming out and protesting in front of the Gandhi statue? First, they don’t even believe in Gandhiji. Only whenever these things come to attract attention, do they go in front of Gandhi. Let them do a protest.”
