Karnataka Government Stops CBI from Investigating MUDA Scam
On Friday, Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari welcomed the Karnataka government’s decision to withdraw general consent for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the alleged MUDA scam. Tiwari stated, “This is not the first time that a consent has been withdrawn. The Opposition and all the states have been saying that the central agencies are being misused… Whatever we have done is according to the law.”
The Karnataka government withdrew open consent for the CBI to conduct investigations in the state. Karnataka Law Minister HK Patil called the CBI “biased” and explained that the decision was made to prevent the CBI from taking the wrong path. Patil said, “We are withdrawing open consent for CBI investigation in the state. We are expressing our concerns about the misuse of the CBI. In all the cases we have referred to the CBI, they have not filed charge sheets, leaving many cases pending. They have also refused to investigate several cases we have sent. There are numerous such instances. They are biased. That’s why we are taking the decision. It’s not because of the MUDA case. We have taken this decision to control them (CBI) from taking the wrong path.”
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also commented, “It is not just Karnataka, the entire opposition parties across the country have taken this decision, given that, the Karnataka government has also taken this decision. We don’t want the CBI to misuse its power.”
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah claimed that the BJP and JD(S) are targeting him because he stands for the poor and fights for social justice. On his X handle, Siddaramaiah posted, “They have launched political retribution against me because they can’t bear to see the pro-people schemes we have introduced. But I have unwavering faith in the law and our Constitution. Ultimately, the truth will prevail in this fight. I want the people of Karnataka to recognise the truth behind these fabricated allegations regarding the MUDA case. The BJP and JD(S) are attempting to stop the pro-poor schemes of our government. The same leaders now calling for my resignation are the ones who opposed every initiative I introduced for the poor and marginalised.”
Earlier, a Special Court in Bengaluru directed the Karnataka Lokyukta to investigate allegations against Chief Minister Siddaramiah regarding the illegal allotment of 14 sites worth Rs 56 crore to his wife Parvathi by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).
