Karnataka Government Forms Commission for Scheduled Castes Internal Reservation
The Karnataka Government has decided to establish a one-man commission to provide advice on implementing internal reservation for Scheduled Castes. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting and comes after a Supreme Court ruling on the matter. The commission will be led by a retired High Court judge and is tasked with reviewing data and submitting a report within three months.
Karnataka Law Minister H K Patil stated that the commission’s findings will guide future recruitment processes, which are currently suspended. The Supreme Court has empowered states to determine which castes and tribes should receive internal reservations in government jobs.
Congress leader Priyank Kharge emphasized that internal reservation was part of the government’s manifesto and highlighted the need for empirical data to support the process. The effort to provide justice through internal reservation has been ongoing for three decades, with previous attempts made by former governments.
In 2005, a commission led by AG Sadashiva was formed to study and make recommendations on internal reservations. In 2012, the Sadashiva Commission recommended a distribution of the 15% reservation among different sub-castes within the Scheduled Castes.
