Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar highlighted the importance of River Cauvery for the state’s prosperity and water conservation. He emphasized that the river is the lifeline of Karnataka and expressed hope that the Congress government would be able to offer ‘bagina’ for the next 10 years.

Mekedatu Project

Shivakumar mentioned that the Mekedatu project would benefit Tamil Nadu by allowing the release of 177 TMC of water even during distress and generating 400 MW of power. He expressed confidence that the courts and Tamil Nadu would support the project.

Role of Rains and Goddess Chamundeshwari

He credited the generous rains to the blessings of Goddess Chamundeshwari, which enabled the release of water to Tamil Nadu. He dismissed propaganda that rains were linked to the government in power and shared that sowing was complete in 62 lakh hectares out of a target of 82 lakh hectares.

Development of Cauvery Basin Area

Shivakumar announced plans to develop the Cauvery Basin area, including dredging canals and introducing new legislation to ensure water for tail-end farmers. He also mentioned the dream of Agriculture Minister N Chaluvaraya Swamy to set up an Agricultural University in the district.

Brindavan and Cauvery Aarti

The government plans to enhance Brindavan near KRS under the PPP model and introduce Cauvery aarti similar to Ganga aarti. A committee has been formed to plan the Cauvery aarti.

Awards and Caution

Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited will award five individuals in the KRS, Kabini, and Hemavathi divisions. Shivakumar also advised caution along the Cauvery river due to subsiding rains and mentioned discussions with Tamil Nadu on excess water usage.
