Big Plans for Bengaluru’s Metro
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has announced that Bengaluru will have 175 km of new metro lines by 2026. This announcement was made during a press conference after inspecting the newly extended metro line from Nagasandra to Madavara on Tumkur Road.
Upcoming Metro Developments
By 2025, 30 km of new metro lines will be added, with a total of 175 km by 2026. The Deputy Chief Minister, along with MP Tejaswi Surya, Nelamangala MLA Srinivasaiah, and Dasarahalli MLA Muniraju, took a metro ride from Yeshwanthpur to Madavara metro station before the press conference.
Shivakumar shared that the first and second phases of the metro are complete, and the third phase has been approved by the Centre. An allocation of Rs 1,130 crore has been made for new train sets.
Additional Infrastructure Plans
Plans include a pedestrian skywalk at Manjunathanagar metro station and a joint development with Indian Railways for a pedestrian passage at Yeshwanthpur railway station. A project report for an underpass at Chikkabidarakallu is ready, and discussions are ongoing with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for an underpass at Madavara metro station.
Commuters from Tumakuru can park at BEIC ground and use the metro to avoid traffic. The 3-km extension from Nagasandra to Madavara will open on an experimental basis, with an official inauguration planned later.
Metro’s Impact on Bengaluru
The green line currently covers 33.46 km, and the purple line spans 40.5 km. Shivakumar expressed gratitude to the Centre and stakeholders, highlighting Bengaluru’s highest metro ridership in the country.
