Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar Talks About Water Release to Tamil Nadu and New Projects
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Irrigation Minister DK Shivakumar announced that 30 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water has been released to Tamil Nadu from the Cauvery basin reservoirs. Speaking at Vidhana Soudha, he said, “We are releasing 51,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day. We have released 30 TMC till now.”
Shivakumar also mentioned that as a precautionary measure, officials have been instructed to fill up all 1,657 tanks in the Cauvery basin area. The agriculture minister aims to sow two lakh hectares of area, with plans to distribute 5.90 lakh quintal seeds, stock 27 lakh tonnes of fertilizers, and disburse Rs 25,000 crore in loans to about 30 lakh farmers through cooperatives. “Our government is committed to the welfare of the farming community,” he said.
The Irrigation Minister informed that the Cauvery Water Management Committee had requested the release of 20 TMC of water from July 11 to July 30, but this was not done due to insufficient water for farmers. An all-party meeting was held to discuss the issue.
Shivakumar also spoke about starting Cauvery aarti, similar to the Ganga aarti in Varanasi, with a committee of 20 members from the Cauvery Basin area to plan the event. The Muzrai department, Cauvery Neeravari Nigam, and other departments will be involved.
Additionally, the Deputy Chief Minister discussed giving a new look to the Cauvery Brindavan amusement park under the PPP model, which will create 8,000-10,000 jobs for locals. The proposal will be presented to the Cabinet soon, and arrangements will be made for people to stay in the amusement park.
