On October 17, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah paid tribute to Maharishi Valmiki by garlanding his statue at the Legislators’ House in Vidhana Soudha. This was part of the celebrations for Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti.

Renaming Schools and Universities

CM Siddaramaiah announced that all government residential schools in Karnataka will be renamed as ‘Maharshi Valmiki residential schools’. Additionally, Raichur University will be renamed as Maharishi Valmiki University. He criticized the BJP for not taking steps to promote equality among minority communities.

Criticism of BJP

Siddaramaiah accused the BJP of only talking about equality without implementing it. He emphasized the importance of economic and social equality, quoting Baba Saheb Ambedkar. He urged people to discern truth from falsehood and to not be misled by BJP’s claims.

Achievements and Schemes

Earlier, Siddaramaiah had promised to launch five guarantee schemes to empower weaker sections upon winning the elections. He fulfilled this promise within eight months of taking office. These schemes provide financial support to minority communities, with each beneficiary family receiving Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 annually.

  • Gruha Lakshmi Scheme: Provides Rs 2,000 per month to 1.21 crore women heads of families.
  • Gruha Jyoti Scheme: Offers free electricity to 1.40 crore households.
  • Yuva Nidhi Scheme: Supports 1.82 lakh unemployed graduates and diploma holders financially.
