Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Discusses Caste Census Implementation

On Friday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the decision regarding the implementation of the caste census report will be made in an upcoming cabinet meeting. This statement was made at the Ginigera Air Strip in Koppal, in response to MLA Basavaraj Rayareddy’s comments on using the caste census report in policymaking. Siddaramaiah also plans to discuss the matter with the Minister of Backward Classes next week.

The caste census report, submitted in February by Jayaprakash Hegde, Chairman of the Commission for Backward Classes, has been a significant topic in Karnataka. The Congress party, along with other INDIA bloc parties, has been advocating for a nationwide caste census. In June, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi criticized the Karnataka government for not releasing the caste census data, suggesting potential consequences if disclosed.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh emphasized the importance of a caste-based census, questioning whether it constitutes casteism. He argued that social empowerment and constitutional safeguarding are not casteism, and highlighted the historical presence of the caste system in India’s structure. Several opposition parties, including Congress, RJD, and NCP-SCP, continue to demand accurate data on caste groups through a nationwide census.
