Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Approves 100% Job Reservation for Kannadigas in Certain Jobs

The Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has decided to reserve 100% of Category C and D jobs in private industries for Kannadigas. This decision was made during a recent cabinet meeting.

The bill, named the State Employment of Local Candidates in the Industries, Factories and Other Establishments Bill, 2024, also proposes reserving 50% of management jobs and 75% of non-management jobs for locals in the private sector. Additionally, the government is considering 100% reservation for locals in C and D grade government jobs.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the importance of this bill in a post on X, stating that the government’s priority is the welfare of Kannadigas. He expressed the desire for Kannadigas to have ample job opportunities in their homeland.

The Labour Department, which drafted the bill, noted that many jobs in industries operating in Karnataka are going to people from North India. The bill aims to ensure that industries benefiting from state resources like land and water provide job reservations for locals.

Previously, the Sarojini Mahishi Committee recommended job reservations for Kannadigas in various industrial units, but no policies were implemented. The Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act of 2022 also suggested job reservations for industries receiving state benefits, but no rules were formulated.

In addition to this bill, the cabinet approved seven other bills, including amendments to the Karnataka Goods and Services Act and the Karnataka Irrigation Act, 2024. These bills will be presented in the current session.
