Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Announces Steps for Social Census and Education Reforms

The Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, is preparing to implement a social census report aimed at helping those deprived of basic amenities. Speaking at an event in Mysore, Siddaramaiah confirmed that the report will soon be presented to the state Cabinet.

Social Census and Equality

Siddaramaiah emphasized the importance of the social census in recognizing and uplifting marginalized communities. He noted that caste-based data has not been collected since 1930 and highlighted the Congress party’s long-standing commitment to this principle.

Education and Social Responsibility

The Chief Minister stressed the vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who advocated for equal opportunities for backward classes, Dalits, and minorities. Siddaramaiah called for education that promotes scientific thinking and social responsibility, quoting poet Kuvempu’s idea of becoming ‘Vishwa Manava’ (global citizens).

Support for Students

Siddaramaiah urged those who have benefited from government programs to give back to society. He recounted the introduction of student hostels in 1977 and the Vidyasiri scheme, which supports students from underprivileged backgrounds. He also announced an increase in scholarships for pre-matric students and plans to provide nutritious meals in hostels.

Future Plans

The Chief Minister outlined plans to establish a residential school in every hobli (administrative division) across the state. Currently, there are 822 Morarji Desai Residential Schools, with 20 more to be built this year, ensuring quality education for children in rural areas.
