Karachi’s Security Worsens: OICCI Report Highlights Rising Crime in Pakistan

The Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) in Pakistan has reported a worsening security situation in Karachi, Sindh, and Balochistan. According to the OICCI’s Security Survey 2024, the security situation in Karachi has deteriorated from 69% in 2023 to 80% in 2024 due to a rise in street crime. Similarly, Balochistan’s security concerns have increased from 68% to 75%.

While Lahore and Peshawar have seen slight improvements, the overall security situation remains a significant concern for attracting business to Pakistan. Kamran Ataullah Khan, a member of the OICCI management committee, emphasized the importance of sustained efforts by law enforcement agencies to enhance security, which is crucial for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).

OICCI Secretary General M Abdul Aleem highlighted that international investors are concerned about various security issues, including street crimes, expatriate security, illegal gratification, and protests. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also reported severe human rights violations in Sindh, including a rise in street crime, kidnappings, and violations of civic and fundamental rights.

The HRCP report noted that enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and the deportation of Afghan refugees and migrants have further exacerbated the situation. The report calls for urgent action to address these issues.
