Karachi Police Arrest Second Suspect in 12-Year-Old Girl’s Tragic Case

Karachi, Pakistan – The Karachi Police have arrested a second suspect in the tragic case of a 12-year-old girl who was brutally raped and murdered. The girl’s body was found on August 25, abandoned near a garbage dump in the Lucky Star area.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG)-South Syed Asad Raza announced the arrest, stating that the suspect was captured during a police encounter on Abdul Sattar Edhi Avenue in Defence’s Phase 8. The suspect was found injured, but it is unclear if the injuries were sustained during the encounter or prior.

The suspect is believed to have been involved in the crime, along with an accomplice who was arrested last week. The prime suspect, a watchman at Bara Market, is already in custody. However, two additional accomplices remain at large.

The case has drawn significant attention, with Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah demanding swift action. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of women and children in Karachi.

According to Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed, there were 522 cases of sexual assault reported against women and underage girls in Karachi in 2023. Additionally, over 4,040 cases of physical assault on women were reported, and 22 bodies were exhumed for further investigation.

The issue of child abuse is widespread in Pakistan. In March 2024, the NGO Sahil reported 4,213 child abuse cases across the country in 2023. The report revealed that 53% of the victims were girls and 47% were boys, with children aged 6 to 15 being the most vulnerable.

Most abusers were known to the victims, including relatives and acquaintances. The report highlighted the urgent need for measures to protect children from such heinous crimes.
