Karachi Faces Alarming Rise in Street Crimes: 100th Death Reported

Karachi’s Alarming Rise in Street Crimes

Karachi, a major city in Pakistan, is experiencing a significant increase in street crime incidents. Recently, the city reported its 100th death related to street crime within the past nine months. This tragic event occurred in Surjani Town, where a young factory worker named Faisal, son of Ghulam Shabbir, was killed during a robbery attempt. Faisal was returning home after collecting his salary when armed robbers confronted him. Upon resisting, the robbers shot him and fled the scene.

In addition to the fatalities, Karachi has seen around 700 injuries due to similar crimes. Despite frequent reports, street crime remains rampant, with citizens often losing their lives or being injured while being robbed of valuables like mobile phones, cash, and motorcycles. The city has witnessed over 50,000 criminal incidents in the first eight months of 2024, including more than 35,041 vehicle thefts, over 15,000 mobile phone robberies, and numerous cases of car theft, kidnapping, and extortion.

In September alone, around 10 people were killed, and the city reported an average of over 200 criminal cases daily. The financial impact of these crimes is estimated to be in millions of Pakistani rupees. The Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) has yet to release official data for September, but it’s clear that Karachi is facing a concerning number of street crime incidents, with estimates of 5,000-6,000 incidents in the last month alone.
