Kapil Sibal Calls for Restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s Statehood

On Thursday, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal expressed his views on the status change of Jammu and Kashmir from a state to a Union Territory, calling it a “constitutional misdemeanour.” He emphasized the need to restore its statehood, stating it as the constitutional right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

In 2019, Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into two Union Territories. Sibal’s comments came after Omar Abdullah, a leader from the National Conference, was sworn in as the Chief Minister, leading the first elected government in the Union Territory since its special status was revoked.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Saxena at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court agreed to hear an application seeking the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood within two months. This application was mentioned by Advocate Gopal Shankarnarayan, and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud agreed to list the case.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, also attended the ceremony and remarked that forming a government without statehood felt incomplete.
