Kane Williamson Excited for New Zealand’s Upcoming Tests in India and Sri Lanka
New Zealand will play six Tests in India and Sri Lanka over the next two months, with five being part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25. Currently third in the WTC standings, New Zealand aims to add another title to their 2021 win.
Former skipper Kane Williamson highlighted the importance of the WTC points system and expressed excitement for the upcoming matches. He said, “In some ways it’s like tournament sport, isn’t it? Even though it’s over a longer period of time in the [World] Test Championship, but the value of games is high.”
New Zealand will face Afghanistan in a one-off Test in Greater Noida, India, before heading to Sri Lanka for a two-Test series. They will then return to India for three more Tests. The team has historically struggled in India, with only two Test wins, the last in 1988. However, they have fared better in Sri Lanka, with five Test wins and a series win in 1984.
Williamson acknowledged the challenges of playing in these regions but emphasized the growth and experience the team would gain. “It’s really important that we look to grow as a unit. It’s nice and clear on how we want to play over here. We always know that it’s a tough challenge whenever you play in these parts of the world, slightly different from back home. But you know always a great experience and playing against a really, really strong side,” he added.
