Three newly elected members of the Himachal Pradesh legislative assembly took their oaths as legislators on Monday after winning the recently concluded by-elections. Congress candidates Kamlesh Thakur and Hardeep Baba Bawa, along with BJP candidate Ashish Sharma, won the seats in Dehra, Nalagarh, and Hamirpur, respectively.

Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, won the assembly by-election from the Dehra constituency by defeating Hoshyar Singh of the BJP. Hardeep Baba Bawa won the Nalagarh assembly constituency seat by defeating the BJP’s KL Thakur. The only win for the BJP was in Hamirpur, where Ashish Sharma won by a narrow margin.
Background
The seats became vacant after three independent legislators, Hoshiyar Singh from Dehra, Ashish Sharma from Hamirpur, and KL Thakur from Nalagarh, who had supported the BJP in the Rajya Sabha polls, resigned from the state assembly and joined the BJP.
Chief Minister’s Statement
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed satisfaction over the bypoll results, stating, “This is the victory of people over money power. The voters have delivered a strong rebuke to the politics of horse trading and have voted to maintain political integrity in the state.”

The results were a setback for the BJP, which won only one of the three contested seats. The INDIA bloc won 10 seats, and an independent candidate won one seat across seven states in the country.
