Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to Speak at Democratic National Convention in Chicago
Chicago [US], August 22: US Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will speak at the Democratic National Convention’s third night in Chicago. The former school teacher and football coach is expected to accept the Democratic nomination on Wednesday. The party aims to highlight the risk to Americans’ freedoms if Donald Trump returns to the White House.
Former US President Bill Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are also set to address the convention. The theme for Wednesday is ‘A fight for our freedoms,’ focusing on retaining rights that Democrats say have been stripped away under Republican administrations, including reproductive rights.
Supporters have gathered outside the United Center in Chicago, holding posters that say ‘For Our Future.’ Siggi Shor, a supporter of Kamala Harris, expressed her excitement about the convention happening in her hometown. She said, ‘I’m ecstatic to be here. This is my first time voting in a presidential election. Inside, everyone just seems so excited and kind.’
Shor believes that Harris and Walz’s embrace of pop culture is energizing young voters, similar to the excitement seen during Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. She also praised Kamala Harris for her support of women and people of color.
Harris is the first Asian American woman and woman of color to head a significant party ticket. After Joe Biden withdrew from the contest and backed her, the party united in support of her. Former President Barack Obama also urged Americans to support Harris, highlighting her past work as California’s attorney general.
Obama criticized Donald Trump, saying the US doesn’t need ‘four more years of bluster and bumbling and chaos.’ He added, ‘America is ready for a new chapter. We are ready for a President Kamala Harris.’
Other notable speakers on Tuesday included Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, and Trump’s former press secretary Stephanie Grisham. Grisham criticized Trump for lacking empathy and morals, stating that he mocked his supporters.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has criticized Democrats for focusing on him during their convention. In an interview, he called Democratic leaders ‘out of control’ and suggested that their rhetoric could have influenced an assassination attempt against him in July.
