Kamala Harris and Oprah Winfrey Discuss Key Issues in Michigan Town Hall
In Michigan, US Vice President Kamala Harris and media mogul Oprah Winfrey hosted a town hall event to discuss important issues like immigration, the economy, reproductive rights, and gun violence prevention. The event, titled ‘Unite for America,’ was attended by around 400 people in person and many more virtually, including celebrities like Ben Stiller, Jennifer Lopez, Bryan Cranston, Chris Rock, Tracee Ellis Ross, Julia Roberts, and Meryl Streep.
Kamala Harris emphasized the importance of democracy and the power of each individual to shape the country. She stated, ‘Our campaign is about who we are as Americans–and making clear that we stand for freedom, independence, and dignity.’
During the discussion on gun violence, Harris said, ‘I think for far too long on the issue of gun violence, some people have been pushing a really false choice to say you’re either in favour of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away. I’m in favour of the Second Amendment, and I’m in favour of assault weapons bans, universal background checks, red flag laws.’
Oprah Winfrey also highlighted the participation of various celebrities. Bryan Cranston expressed his optimism for the campaign, while Chris Rock mentioned his desire to see a Black woman president. Julia Roberts shared her excitement about her children voting for the first time, and Tracee Ellis Ross addressed criticisms from Republican vice presidential nominee Senator JD Vance.
New polls show Vice President Harris leading against former President Trump in key battleground states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada, and North Carolina. Nationally, Harris leads Trump with an average of 49.8% to 46%.
