Justin Trudeau Plans to Reduce Immigration to Canada

On October 25, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a plan to temporarily reduce the number of immigrants coming to Canada over the next two years. This decision aims to pause population growth, allowing the economy to catch up and ensuring the system works effectively for all Canadians.

During a news conference on Parliament Hill, Trudeau was joined by Immigration Minister Marc Miller and his parliamentary secretary Paul Chiang. The new plan will decrease the number of permanent residents arriving in Canada from 500,000 to 395,000 in 2025 and from 500,000 to 380,000 in 2026. The target for 2027 is set at 365,000 permanent residents.

Marc Miller emphasized that immigration is crucial for Canada’s economic success and growth. However, the plan aims to achieve well-managed, sustainable growth by pausing population growth in the short term.

Trudeau is also facing pressure from within his party, with some Liberal MPs urging him to decide his future by October 28. Despite this, Trudeau has stated he will lead his Liberal Party into the next election. Liberal MP Sean Casey expressed disappointment over Trudeau’s decision to remain as leader.

Justin Trudeau has been serving as the 23rd prime minister of Canada since 2015 and the leader of the Liberal Party since 2013.
