Justice Sanjiv Khanna to Take Oath as Chief Justice of India

On Monday, Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The oath will be administered by President Droupadi Murmu at 10 am. Justice Khanna will succeed Chief Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud, who is retiring on Sunday. Justice Khanna’s tenure as Chief Justice will last six months.

The Government of India has issued a formal notification for Justice Khanna’s appointment, effective November 11, 2024. The Ministry of Law and Justice confirmed that the President appointed him under Article 124 of the Constitution of India.

Justice Khanna’s Career

Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna began his legal career in 1983 with the Delhi Bar Council. He has expertise in constitutional law, taxation, arbitration, commercial law, and environmental law. He also served as senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department in Delhi.
