Justice Sanjiv Khanna Proposed as Next Chief Justice of India

In New Delhi, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud has recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor. Justice Khanna, currently the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, is set to become the 51st Chief Justice of India upon government approval. His tenure will begin after CJI Chandrachud retires on November 10 and will last until May 13, 2025.

Justice Khanna’s Career

Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna began his legal career in 1983. He practiced at the Tis Hazari district courts and later at the Delhi High Court. He became an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and a permanent judge in 2006. Justice Khanna was appointed to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.

CJI Chandrachud, born on November 11, 1959, has been serving as the 50th Chief Justice of India since November 2022. He has a distinguished career, having served as a judge in the Bombay High Court and as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. Educated at Delhi University and Harvard University, he has been involved in several landmark judgments.
