New Delhi, India – August 30: Supreme Court Judge Justice Hima Kohli, during her farewell function, announced that she is ‘re-attiring’ rather than retiring. She expressed her excitement about adding more colors to her wardrobe and life, moving beyond the blacks, whites, and greys of her judicial attire.

Justice Kohli, who has served as a judge of the Delhi High Court and Chief Justice of Telangana High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court, will retire on September 1, 2024. Her retirement will reduce the number of female judges in the Supreme Court to two.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud praised Justice Kohli as an inspiration to young lawyers and judges. He also addressed the need for more women judges, highlighting that 78 out of 108 recruits to the Delhi district judiciary were women. CJI Chandrachud emphasized the importance of creating equal opportunities for women in the legal profession.

CJI Chandrachud also mentioned that Justice Kohli, as the chairperson of the Supreme Court’s Gender Sensitization and Internal Complaints Committee, has been a strong advocate for gender justice. He noted that women do not need to forsake their femininity to succeed in the legal profession.
