Junior Doctors Meet West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Amid Protests
In Kolkata, West Bengal, a group of 17 junior doctors traveled to Nabanna in Howrah district to meet with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Their meeting is part of ongoing protests following the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctors have been on a hunger strike for 15 days, demanding justice and healthcare reforms.
Dr. Aqeeb Ashraf, a junior doctor, expressed hope that the meeting would lead to positive outcomes and acceptance of their demands for healthcare reform. He stated, “We are leaving from here and hope to reach there on time. We hope that something comes out of this meeting and our demands are accepted to make a beginning of reforms in the health system.”
The meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee reportedly lasted 45 minutes, during which the doctors presented evidence and discussed their 10 demands. Dr. Ashraf mentioned that even a short meeting could be sufficient to reach mutual understanding and prompt action.
The incident has led to widespread protests across West Bengal, with political tensions rising between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the state government. The BJP has called for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
West Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar expressed hope for a resolution, urging both the junior doctors and the state government to engage in discussions without rigidity.
