Junior Doctors in West Bengal Protest Over Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Incident
In Kolkata, West Bengal, junior doctors have resumed a complete ‘cease work’ protest following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctors are demanding better safety and security measures at medical establishments.
Demands and Concerns
After an eight-hour meeting, the junior doctors listed 10 demands, including improved hospital security, better health infrastructure, and an end to the culture of threats and politics in hospitals. The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front stated, “We are compelled to return to a full ceasework starting from today. Unless we receive clear action from the government on safety, patient services, and the politics of fear, we will have no choice but to continue our full strike.”

The doctors expressed frustration over the slow pace of the CBI’s investigation and the Supreme Court’s delayed hearings. They criticized the lack of progress and the failure to bring the culprits to justice.
Government Response
The doctors have had discussions with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Chief Secretary, reiterating their demands. Despite their efforts, the state government has not convened a meeting with a state task force or responded to their letters. The doctors highlighted the inadequate installation of CCTV cameras as a major concern.

The junior doctors emphasized the need for representation in hospital decision-making committees. They called for democratic elections to ensure that students and junior doctors have a voice in these bodies.
Supreme Court’s Actions
The Supreme Court has taken cognisance of the case and directed the state government to remove any social media posts disclosing the victim’s identity. The court noted that the victim’s injuries were worsened by her braces and glasses. Senior Advocate Indira Jaisingh revealed that four individuals, including elected council members, were present at the crime scene. The case has been adjourned for further hearing after the Dussehra vacation.
