Junior Doctors in Kolkata Begin Hunger Strike for Justice

In Kolkata, junior doctors have started an indefinite hunger strike to demand justice from the West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee. They emphasize that their protest is for the public’s benefit, not against them.

Dr. Sayantani’s Statement

Dr. Sayantani, a representative of the West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front, stated, “We will continue our hunger strike until our demands for justice on humanitarian grounds are met. This is not a fight against the public, but by and for the public.” She highlighted the case of Abhaya, a victim of rape and murder, as a catalyst for their protest.

Background of the Protest

The protest began after the doctors’ demands for improved safety and security in hospitals were not addressed by the government. Despite a 24-hour ultimatum, the government has not taken sufficient action. Dr. Sayantani and five other representatives are leading the hunger strike, while other doctors continue their duties during the Navratri festival.

Supreme Court Involvement

The Supreme Court has requested a report from the National Task Force on safety issues following the August 9 incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court aims to develop an action plan to prevent gender-based violence and ensure a safe working environment for medical professionals.

Wider Protests

In response to the incident, students and doctors from North Bengal Medical College and Hospital held a torchlight procession, and doctors from private hospitals lit lamps at Ganga Ghat in Kolkata as a form of protest.
