JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman Meets with PTI Leaders and Government Officials

Islamabad [Pakistan], September 2: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Senator Kamran Murtaza announced that his party might protest on its own issues but will not join any protests led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). This decision comes despite multiple meetings between the senior leadership of the two parties.

On August 23, PTI leaders visited JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his home, agreeing to cooperate on an ‘issue to issue and agenda to agenda’ basis. Later, the leaders of the two parties held another meeting.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari also met with Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who had announced a ‘solo flight’ against the government. Zardari’s meeting with Rehman followed an agreement with Imran Khan’s party to develop a joint strategy to challenge the government.

Shehbaz Sharif visited the JUI-F chief to seek support and discourage participation in any anti-government protests. Some political experts view these meetings as significant, especially with the upcoming National Assembly and Senate sessions. Others believe the president may have tried to dissuade Rehman from announcing any agitation against the government by making certain ‘offers.’

Senator Kamran Murtaza, speaking on DawnNewsTV’s programme Doosra Rukh, described the meetings with Shehbaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari as ‘social’ rather than political. He stated, ‘There were political conversations definitely, but you could call this more of a social meet than a political one.’

Regarding the talks between PTI and JUI-F leaders, Murtaza confirmed that Senator Shibli Faraz, Lawyer Gohar Khan, and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser attended the meeting. He said, ‘We have told them some things with clarity as to how far we would go with them and to what end we would not.’

Murtaza reiterated that the JUI-F would protest on their issues but would not join another party’s protest for the time being.
