Journalist Bachal Ghunio Killed in Pakistan’s Sindh

A local journalist named Bachal Ghunio was killed in the Ghotki district of Sindh, Pakistan. Locals have blamed dacoits for his death. According to the police, Ghunio was attacked while he was in his fields, and his body was taken to Taluka headquarter Ubuaro hospital. An investigation is ongoing.

Ghunio’s family held a protest outside the senior superintendent of police’s office in Mirpur Mathelo, demanding the arrest of the suspects. Ghunio’s minor son mentioned that there was enmity between his father and some community members, but the issues had been resolved. Despite this, Ghunio was killed, and his opponents had targeted him before.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has ordered the immediate arrest of those responsible and intensified operations against dacoits in the riverine area. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon condemned the incident and promised that the culprits would be brought to justice. Sindh Assembly Opposition Leader Ali Khurshidi called the targeting of journalists an attack on press freedom and demanded the arrest of those responsible.

Ghunio’s death is part of a worrying trend of violence against journalists in Pakistan, with eight other journalists killed in 2024. Recent victims include Malik Hassan Zaib, Ashfaq Ahmed Sial, Muhammad Siddique Mengal, Kamran Dawar, Nasrullah Gadani, and Khalil Jibran. International organizations like the International Press Institute and the International Federation of Journalists have expressed concern over the safety of journalists in Pakistan.
