Joe Root and Gus Atkinson Lead England to Victory Over Sri Lanka at Lord’s

Joe Root’s twin hundreds and Gus Atkinson’s all-round performance helped England secure a confident win over Sri Lanka at Lord’s on Sunday. With this win, England now has 81 WTC points and has improved their WTC point percentage to 45%. They remain in fourth place behind India, Australia, and New Zealand, according to the ICC.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s loss has seen their point percentage drop from 40% to 33.33%, placing them behind South Africa and Bangladesh in seventh position. Atkinson’s heroics ensured England’s win on the fourth day itself. He scored 118 and 14 runs with the bat and took 2/40 and 5/62 with the ball. Atkinson is only the third England Men’s player to achieve this feat in Tests, following Ian Botham and Tony Greig. He is the first to do so since 1984.

The Three Lions created a record with their 190-run victory, the biggest margin at Lord’s against Sri Lanka. The visitors were bowled out for 292 runs while chasing a target of 483 runs. This win marks England’s fifth successive home victory this season, a first since 2004. It was also the first time Sri Lanka had lost a Test at Lord’s since 1991, ending a run of five successive drawn games at the venue.

On August 31, Joe Root smashed his 34th Test century in the second innings, breaking the England record and equalling the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Matthew Hayden, Younis Khan, and Mahela Jayawardene.
