Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Questions Timing of Income Tax Raids Amid Elections
In Ranchi, Jharkhand, Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed concerns over the timing of Income Tax department raids on his associate, Sunil Srivastava, during a press conference. Soren suggested that such actions have become more frequent since 2014, especially during elections. He questioned the functioning of investigative agencies and highlighted the rarity of such actions before 2014.
Soren remarked, “Have you ever seen such action in the middle of elections?” He emphasized that the country is observing the parameters on which these agencies operate. Soren also mentioned the emergence of a new BJP cadre in the area but assured that they would handle the situation.
Brinda Karat, a CPI(M) leader, also questioned the timing of the raids as the state assembly elections approach. She accused the BJP of using agencies like the ED and CBI due to their “helplessness” in Jharkhand. Karat urged the Election Commission to intervene, condemning the raids as a misuse of power.
The raids occurred at Sunil Srivastava’s residence, who is reportedly a close aide to CM Soren. The Jharkhand Assembly elections are scheduled for November 13 and 20, with results to be announced on November 23. The JMM, led by Soren, is in alliance with Congress, RJD, and left parties, facing competition from the BJP-led NDA.
