Jharkhand CM Champai Soren Resigns, Hemant Soren to Take Over Again

On July 3, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren resigned from his position just five months after taking office. This move sets the stage for Hemant Soren, the executive president of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), to return as Chief Minister.

Champai Soren’s Statement

Champai Soren explained that the ruling alliance had chosen Hemant Soren as their leader. He said, “A few days ago, I was made the Chief Minister and I got the responsibility of the state. After Hemant Soren was back, our alliance took this decision and we chose Hemant Soren as our leader. Now, I have resigned from the post of Chief Minister.”

Hemant Soren’s Return

Hemant Soren, who was released from Birsa Munda Jail on June 28 after nearly five months, is set to form the new government. He had resigned as Chief Minister before his arrest on January 31. Hemant Soren stated, “The CM (Champai Soren) has told you everything…We will tell you everything in detail. We have followed all procedures.”

Reactions from Political Leaders

JMM MP Mahua Maji praised the decision, stating that Hemant Soren’s leadership was crucial. Congress leader Banna Gupta confirmed that the party had elected Hemant Soren as their leader and presented this to the Governor.

However, the BJP criticized the move. Jharkhand BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo said, “Hemant Soren is again all set to become the chief minister and unceremoniously he has removed the present chief minister, Champai Soren from his post… The power remains restricted to the family and that is a sad state of affairs.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also reacted, alleging that a senior tribal leader was being removed.

Background

Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in January on charges related to an alleged land scam and money laundering. Champai Soren, the state transport minister, is a seven-time MLA representing the Seraikella constituency in Jharkhand.
