Jennifer Larson Highlights Importance of Free Press at Odisha Journalism Event
In Bhubaneswar, Odisha, Jennifer Larson, the US Consul General in Hyderabad, emphasized the importance of a free and open press as a foundation of democracy. She addressed over 30 journalists at the KIIT campus during the conclusion of the ‘Countering Disinformation for Odisha Journalists’ training program.
Larson praised the journalists’ dedication to fact-checking and responsible reporting, noting that their efforts set a high standard. The program, supported by the US Consulate General Hyderabad, provided training for journalists in Telugu, Urdu, and Odia languages across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha.
Larson encouraged participants to use their new skills to promote truth and transparency. The training was organized by the Department of Journalism at Osmania University in collaboration with the Odisha Women in Media group. Certificates were distributed to participants, and Larson expressed gratitude for the support from KIIT University and the Odisha Women in Media group.
The event featured presentations from participants, showcasing their learning and the impact of the training. Some journalists have already begun applying these techniques in their newsrooms, while others are training colleagues. The event was attended by KIIT Registrar Gyan Ranjan Mohanty, Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das, and KIIT’s School of Communication Associate Dean Rajeev Panda.
